Farrah works in our Veteran and Families team as an Employment Consultant, providing support to veterans with health conditions in the South West. We caught up with Farrah to find out what life is like as an Employment Consultant and what she loves most about her job.
How long have you been an Employment Consultant?
I joined The Poppy Factory as an Employment Consultant in February 2016. Before that, I worked within four HM prisons supporting people due for release to secure employment. I’ve also worked as an office manager within the healthcare industry.
Where do you work?
I cover the South West which includes Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.
How did you get into this job?
Whilst working within the prison service and supporting a veteran, I established that I needed to source some bespoke support for them. I contacted one of my former colleagues, Arren, who I recalled worked somewhere that supported veterans. It was from there that I learned about The Poppy Factory and the amazing work it does. The charity and the role really appealed to me and luckily there was a vacancy I could apply for.
What does a typical day look like?
No day is the same. A typical day could be travelling to meet a new veteran who has registered for support and meeting with them for a chat about their current situation and establishing a plan going forwards.
I also support the people on my caseload with things such as job applications, CV’s, covering letters, interview preparation and contacting employers. I also network with other organisations so that I’m aware of alternative support I may be able to signpost veterans to, this may because of things like adjustments that need to be made in the workplace, healthcare referrals, housing issues, support with debt/addictions or convictions or it could be skills and employment training. I also support veterans whilst they are in work where needed. I attend internal and external meetings and ensure my own training is up to date.
What do you love most about your job?
I enjoy supporting other people to make improvements that can affect many parts of their lives. The role is very interesting and also rewarding for both the veteran and myself.
How do you approach working with a new veteran/family member?
I approach working with a new veteran with an open mind. I’m very interested in the veteran’s journey and thrive on helping them find new ways to move forward. This may be into paid employment, volunteering, education or self-employment. It may be that we need to support with their health/housing or education prior to employment. I enjoy creating a plan with the veteran to reach their goals.
How many veterans/family members are you working with?
Currently, I have 20 clients that are actively seeking support, and 19 clients in jobs who I offer in-work support to for up to 12 months.
How many people have you helped back to work?
22 so far this year.
Do you have any advice for a veteran who is thinking about contacting The Poppy Factory?
Please do, we are a very supportive organisation and whichever consultant you are assigned to, I know they will do their utmost to help you moving forwards. My colleagues and myself are all very passionate about supporting others.
Do you have any hobbies?
I like travelling, Greece is one of my favourite destinations. I enjoy spending time with my family and I also find gardening therapeutic.
